GRAPHIC DESIGN

A playful three-part experiment created for first year students of Communication Design at FBAUL, Lisbon. Addressing how the graphic designer employs colour as an instrument to convey its message, this project draws references of authors from different creative areas that have iconic and recognisable colour schemes—which in turn play a great role in asserting their own language. As opposed to an end in itself, this experiment uses colour as a means to an end, highlighting that colour is only one of the designer’s many tools at hand in the process of creation.

COLOUR IS / Divided in three parts, this project was created with the intent of passing a message to first year students of the Graphic Design and Communication programme at FBAUL, Lisbon.

By contrasting it to other creative areas, the idea of this project was that the graphic designer must use all at its disposal to convey its message the best way possible, especially with the use of colour. The final result were three graphic pieces addressing the use of colour as an instrument in a graphic designer’s work: one in the form of a diagram, the other in the form of a poster and finally an animated gif, comprising all the shades extracted from different creatives used throughout the three-part exercise.
